"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time."- Thomas A. Edison
One of the hard changes for students moving from High School to University in Japan is the focus on the form of English in High School to the use of English in University. As a result, I hope that students can remember that mistakes in speaking are useful if we take the time to learn from them and move forward.

I'm from a small town in Michigan in the United States but I've been teaching in Kansai for the last 18 years. At university I studied history and philosophy before going on to do a Masters in Applied Linguistics. I became interested in teaching language to non-native speakers when I was studying the philosophy of language in university and thinking about my experiences with the many exchange students I had worked with from Japan, Turkey, Germany, Holland, Spain, Panama and other places.
My teaching interests mostly involve the use of content to teach a variety of language skills and abilities while also improving student understanding of the subject being studied. I have taught a wide variety of content classes including: Cross-Cultural Studies, History, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Accounting, Geology and Cultural Change. I find that, although students sometimes find it stressful at the beginning of the content courses, they improve their English more naturally without realizing it as they focus on learning the content. This is very satisfying and practical as students are learning two things at the same time.

Here is a picture of my work area and some of my books. To be a good student it is helpful to make each class personally interesting. Sometimes that means reading related books or other materials. Today we can use computers or smart phones to add to our learning and make the material studied in each class interesting. We just need to find the right resources.
